Gambling is a major entertainment industry grossing trillions of dollars in revenue world-wide. Gambling comes in many forms from casinos, online casinos and poker, sports betting and horse and dog racing gambling. The casino is only one form of gambling. Casino games range from poker, blackjack, roulette, other table games and slot machines. Sports betting has become the number one form of gambling. Gambling at some casinos, depending on if the jurisdiction allows it, also can involve sports betting for most major sporting events as well as horse races.
The original form of sports gambling was placing bets at the horse race track. The track was the original casino and was more than just a place for avid gamblers but a social event as well. The excitement of a live sporting event in which individuals could place bets would draw crowds to the track on a spring or summer afternoon.
Gambling is no longer limited physical places the internet has made online gambling possible. The rise of the online casino means being able to play any casino game, including online poker, from the user’s home without having to travel. Online gaming ranges from card games to traditional slot games with even more advanced video slot games. Casino games will most likely be able to played online again due to the recent Department of Justice opinion suggesting the Wire Act ban does not apply to online poker. While sports betting online is still clearly illegal, this recent interpretation may lead the way to the legalization in the United States of the most popular form of online gamling, online poker.
Gambling is legal in some form in most States however the type allowed by law varies. In some jurisdictions only state run lotteries are allowed or charitable purposes. Other jurisdictions will allow Indian casinos only sovereign tribal land or river-boat casinos. A handful of States, Nevada being the number first, allow full legalized gambling in the form of commercial casinos and regulate it through a gaming commission. Massachusetts has recently approved three full resort style casinos and one slot palor in that state, paving the way for the bidding process of casinos. More jurisdictions are legalizing a once socially taboo vice in order to provide tax revenues and jobs. The argument for legalization of gambling is that the state can regulate the use of gambling and keep it out of the control of the criminal black market.
Gambling as traditionally known is changing. No longer is it required to go the track or the casino to place a bet. The casino has come to the customer’s home, right on their laptop. From online gambling, sports betting, the casino and the race track the gaming industry is growing along the way providing jobs, revenue, community growth and a form of entertainment for all.
